CHAPTER ELEVEN

FINN

After stopping by the pub for lunch, Finn drove them to the Wesley Estate. The land was owned by a family struggling to upkeep the manor and surrounding properties. The house itself was hundreds of years old, and something was always needing to be repaired.

The Wesley family was in danger of losing everything. If Finn invested in the new wilderness business they had started, the Wesleys would be able to hold onto their ancestral home, keep it up, and perhaps even flourish enough to breathe life back into the small surrounding town.

The massive chunk of land the Wesleys owned had a lake, some cliffs ideal for climbing, and a huge forest perfect for wilderness camping. Finn turned the car toward the guard house at the back of the property. Deacon, the eldest Wesley son, pack alpha, and the one responsible for the wilderness activities ideas, was waiting for them.

“Hiya,” Deacon greeted them as soon as they exited the car.

“Deacon. How is it going?” Finn shook the man’s hand. “This is Willa Prentice.”

Deacon’s eyes widened. “Wow, so you are. I’ve been following your blog for a long time. Your piece on Gunther McAfee’s company probably saved my life. Just when your story broke, I was going to head over to McAfee’s for some skydiving. You’re very welcomed here, Miss Prentice.”

She waved him off. “Please call me Willa. I’m glad you didn’t go to McAfee’s place. That would have been very dangerous.”

Deacon nodded. “No doubt. You’re very brave for speaking out against him like that.”

Finn watched Willa as she shuffled uncomfortably on her feet. She was so uncomfortable with the praise, and the deep blush on her cheeks was very telling. She didn’t like talking or even thinking about this McAfee person. “We’re just here to explore the property,” Finn cut in, hoping to ease some of Willa’s discomfort.

Deacon smiled. “Good thing you have Willa here with you. I’m sure you’ll have a blast out there.” He pulled a map out of his back pocket and handed it over to Willa. “This gives you a good idea of our property and all of the things you can do around here. Go on ahead and explore. If you need anything or get into any kind of trouble, you can use this.” He gave Finn a walkie-talkie, tapping another that was tucked into his jacket pocket. “We wouldn’t let you go out there without some sort of backup, but there are very few scary animals out there.”

Finn grinned at Deacon, a wolf shifter who knew that the Levine family were dragon shifters. There would hardly be something scarier than a wolf or dragon out there.

“Now, follow me into the gatehouse. We’ve transformed it into our B&B. I’ll show you to your rooms.”

“I thought that we were going to sleep out in the woods,” Willa said as she followed Deacon into the guardhouse that was turned into the sweetest and quaintest bed and breakfast ever. It was well decorated and very welcoming, with cheerful colors offsetting the dark wood paneling on the walls and dark gray stone on the ground.
